Sweet-smelling blackcurrant, heady red grapes and strawberries sweetness ― feel the all-in-one flavor and aroma. A cup of Kenya Ndaroini AB makes the morning bright, fresh, and filled with summer fantasies, leaving a pleasantly sweet aftertaste with a hint of currant jam. Currant notes are traditional for Kenyan coffee, but the SL28 variety from Ndaroini has the brightest ones.
Kenya is located along the equator and has a corresponding climate. It is warm and moderately humid with evenly distributed precipitation in winter and summer. It allows the local population to harvest coffee twice per year. 99% of the harvest is Arabica. It’s not just a common Arabica; it’s a Specialty Coffee thanks to fertile and well-drained soils on mountain slopes that are perfect for the best varieties.
Ndaroini, translated from Swahili, is a place of rest. This is not a random name: the farmers returned here after delivery of heavy bags with coffee cherries to the washing station. Over time, farmers built their own station and began washing beans near the plantations. But it happened only in 1984. Today it is one of the most famous washing stations in Nyeri, belongs to the farmers’ cooperative society Gikanda FCS and has a reputation as the high-class coffee producer.
SL28 is a traditional Kenyan variety bred by Scott Agricultural Laboratories at the beginning of growing coffee in Kenya in the last century. By the way, there is a certain paradox here: Kenya, which borders on Ethiopia, the coffee capital, in the north, and has a similar climate, began growing coffee trees only a century ago. So, we can say that everything started with SL28, which gave birth to all the other varieties that are grown in Kenya.
The “AB” marking in the title is the Kenyan classification of beans according to the size of the coffee bean grading sieve. In our case, the bean size is 6-7 millimeters.
Helpful tip: Baristas recommend brewing Kenya Ndaroini AB at 80°C max. The prolonged extraction process in non-hot water manifests the berry nature of coffee brighter.
